Romeo y Julieta is one of the best known brands of domincan cigars. The brand was named for the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It was created by Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia in 1875 [1]. The popularity of the cigar markedly increased in 1903 when the brand was acquired by Jose Rodriguez Fernandez.
The development of the Churchill style of cigar (named after Winston Churchill) is considered to be due to Romeo y Julieta.
Romeo y Julieta cigarettes were launched in Cuba in 1999 where they are made. They are sold in Brazil, France, Mexico, Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Paraguay and the United Kingdom. Made with the same tobacco as their older cigar namesakes, Romeo y Julieta cigarettes are remarkable for their very strong flavour. They comply with the European Union's tobacco laws.
The cigar brand is a joint venture between Altadis, a Spanish tobacco company, and Habanos SA, Cuba's national tobacco company. The cigarette brand is produced by Habanos and BrasCuba, another Cuban tobacco venture.
